Thanks to the support of a generous local donor, we are delighted to have funded a brand new, state-of-the-art treadmill for the Oxford Centre for Enablement (OCE), based at the Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre.

This vital new piece of equipment, costing over £60,000, replaces a traditional NHS treadmill that was 20 years old.

It will help many patients receiving rehabilitation at the OCE, including those recovering from stokes and trauma and will have a particularly important role in physiotherapy treatment for Multiple sclerosis (MS) patients.

MS is a lifelong condition that can cause problems with vision, arm or leg movement, sensation and balance.

Many people living with MS struggle with walking, yet maintaining mobility is crucial due to the degenerative nature of the condition.

Tamsin Rawlings, Head of Major Gifts for the charity visited the team at the OCE when the equipment was delivered. She was joined by the generous local supporter whose donation made it all possible.

Tamsin explains: "It was just lovely to see the excitement of the rehab team as this new equipment arrived. They were keen to show us all the new benefits it offers patients.

"The hoists and pulleys mean the treadmill is fully customisable - enabling patients who previously were previously considered too weak or injured to use traditional physio equipment to benefit.

"This is so important - it means they can start their physio journey at a pace that is right for them - and this can be continually adjusted as they get stronger. Both the rehab team and patients are delighted with this advance."

The treadmill is particularly beneficial for MS patients who have had a hospital stay,  as the degenerative nature of the disease often means that if you lose mobility, it is lost permanently.   Helping to safeguard each patients' mobility, improves their quality of life, and overall physical and mental health.

It is often easier to practice walking when there is a mild to moderate level of disability, however, very little is known about the benefits of exercise and walking in people with MS with significant mobility issues. This high tech treadmill will change that.

We would like to thank our very kind donor who has supported this special project.

The work we do across our hospitals is fuelled by the kindness of our community. Donations, fundraising and gits in Wills power our charity to transform the experience for patients and bring in new advances, just like this example.
