You Make Possible Music & Art Safari-themed artwork transforms Tom's Ward Tom’s Ward at the Oxford Children’s Hospital has just been given a bright new look thanks to some beautiful new artwork, developed by Artlink, the hospital arts programme, and funded by Oxford Hospitals Charity. Patients and staff on the ward have been transported to a safari with playful animal-themed artworks designed by artist Stephen Smith aka Neasden Control Centre. The safari theme begins in the reception area and continues through the corridor and bays, with every bed space now featuring its own unique animal illustration creating a fun, interactive environment where children can explore and spot different creatures around the ward—from cheeky monkeys swinging by the windows to tigers, rhinos, and elegant flamingos. Daniel Pope is the Charge Nurse on Tom’s Ward. We asked him what he thought of the new artwork, and he told us: “It’s a brilliant, vibrant addition to the ward and it’s been extremely well-received. The artist has worked with staff and the hospital's Arts Lead, Ruth Charity, to create a carefully considered design to support all young patients and their families using the ward, from babies to teenagers. “We are so grateful to Oxford Hospitals Charity for supporting us in transforming our ward. Since the installation, our nurses, doctors, care support workers, housekeepers, and play specialists have all commented on the colourful and engaging designs, which bring a sense of fun and play to the ward. Our patients and their carers have particularly enjoyed having their own animal above their bedspace, which they can then spot in other artwork around the ward. Ruth Charity, Arts Lead, said: “We invited Steve to create a more positive, welcoming atmosphere for young patients, helping to ease anxiety and provide engaging distractions during their stay. He has definitely achieved these aims, and we're delighted with his transformation of the wards” To find out more about our Artlink programme, click here Manage Cookie Preferences
